The meaning of Elif
Elif is the first letter of the alphabet and a single upright line. It is also the first letter of the word "Allah", so in calligraphy it is described as a symbol of oneness and of an upright, dignified stance.
In thuluth script the classical description asks for an elif "straight as a cypress and without blemish", its height measured in dots. As a single stroke it has no neighbouring letter to hide a flaw, which makes it a calligrapher's test.
